Kroger has invested more than $71 million to rebuild our 17 stores within the Columbus city limits. ![]() Kroger is committed to investing in Columbus. We continue to employ more than 20,000 people in the Columbus Division. This closure did not result in a single lost job. We are proud that every Northern Lights store associate has accepted work at other area stores. When we make those hard choices, we strive to take care of our associates who serve our customers every day. Those lean profit margins mean that we must sometimes make tough decisions in order to keep our prices low for all customers. Kroger makes less than 2 cents profit on every $1 in sales. Grocery stores are a “penny profit” business. Nobody is more disappointed that these efforts were insufficient than we are. In addition to that investment, in 2006 a fuel center was added to bring more trade to the area. In fact, Kroger not only continued to operate the store at a loss for several years as other grocery retailers left the area, but we also made significant capital investments totaling more than $2.5 million in 2012 to improve the store in an effort to grow sales. The store lost money every year since 2012, for a total loss of $3.6 million over the six-year period. The Northern Lights store was unprofitable for many years, despite our best efforts to make it successful. Closing a store is a difficult decision, and one we do not take lightly or make hastily. In December, management from Kroger’s Columbus Division announced our decision to close the Northern Lights Kroger store in Clinton Township. ![]()
